Gender Equality, Disability and Inclusion Statement (GESI)

TEA@SUNRISE is committed to promoting gender equality and diversity in all our activities. The project aims to develop a network that will lead to new, sustainable, locally-manufacturable solar supplies within an equitable and just energy transition framework. This network forms part of the Transforming Energy Access (TEA) portfolio under the UK Ayrton Fund. We recognize that achieving our mission requires the inclusion and active participation of diverse voices, particularly those of women and other underrepresented or marginalised groups. By marginalised groups, we refer to individuals and communities who have been systematically excluded or disadvantaged due to factors such as gender, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, geographic location (including rural or remote areas), and lack of access to resources and opportunities.

Why GESI Matters to TEA@SUNRISE

At TEA@SUNRISE, we believe that an equitable energy transition can only happen when it includes the voices and contributions of those most impacted by inequality. By prioritising gender equality, disability, and inclusion (GESI), we aim to create solutions that are not only technically sound but also socially just. This commitment ensures that throughout our activities we will consider potential benefits/harms for all community members, particularly underrepresented groups (i.e. those who are often excluded from decision-making processes). By embedding GESI into our work, we aim to build a more inclusive energy future that leaves no one behind, fostering economic resilience and equitable growth for everyone.

Our Commitment

1. Inclusive Participation:

  • We ensure equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation, or socio-economic background, to participate in and benefit from the TEA at SUNRISE project.
  • We actively encourage the involvement of women and other underrepresented communities in the implementation, and leadership of our project.
  • As the TEA@SUNRISE team, we will work together in a way that values all contributions, and that builds and sustains mutually respectful and productive relationships within the wider network. We will strive to ensure that outputs are not potentially biassed and do not have negative impacts on gender equality.

2. Diverse Leadership:

  • We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive network that reflects the communities we serve. This includes ensuring that women and other underrepresented groups have access to leadership and decision-making roles within the project.
  • We will identify and aim to provide access to training and development opportunities to support the career advancement of diverse talent within our organisation and projects.

3. Equitable Benefits:

  • We aim to ensure that opportunities identified within the network are equally accessible.
  • Any initiatives/projects we develop should aim to improve energy access and create economic opportunities for women and underrepresented groups. By seeking opportunities including tools, resources etc we seek to enhance their resilience, promote social and economic inclusion, and contribute to their long-term sustainability.
